USING HOUSE RULES TO IMPROVE GAME PLAY
You know you’ve got a good game if the minute you finish it, you want to play it again. On the flip side, if packing the game away is a blessed relief, you’ve got a game that needs to be adapted (or possibly discarded). For me, games that are reliant on pure luck require adaptation as they don’t hold my attention for long. In pure luck games, there are very few decisions to make and even if you manage to win, it isn’t through good game play, but down to the roll of the dice. Any game in which you can leave the table, go to the loo or make a cup of tea while other people ‘play for you’ falls into this category. Just making a few modifications can significantly boost interest levels, keeping you away from the kettle and adding a much-needed twist to a pedestrian game.
We own Game of Life: Adventures Edition. Normally a game like this would not last that long in our house, but it has survived the chop because, firstly, everyone loves the tokens, which are little model cars. There is something truly lovely about having children and pets and putting them in the back of the miniature cars. In this version, you can also turn your car into a boat or a plane, which is even better. Secondly, it has a cool multipurpose spinner in the middle of the board. You spin to see how many spaces to move, you spin to win money and you spin to discover the outcome of stories. Not only that, but you can also push down on the spinner and move the tracks on the board, changing the available squares and the prices of the houses. Thirdly, it is a classic. Lots of people love it and it might get some reluctant players to the table. But even with these positives, my interest is lost pretty quickly, and the game is therefore an ideal candidate for house rules.
For me, one of the most exciting bits of the game is when you choose a career. This only happens once towards the start of the game, then you’re stuck with it. Maybe this was the case when the game was created, but a ‘job for life’ is now a thing of the past, so why not create a house rule that allows career changes? To change career, you must forfeit your payday and instead return to the career track. You can also go back to college, should you wish, to improve your chances of a better career. When players purchase a house, they are able to claim one of the ten ‘spin to win’ places as an extra bonus, increasing their chances of winning a sweepstake until the house is sold again.
